Poppers : Do Straight People Use Them?
Poppers are just used by Gay men right? Wrong! Straight people use them too! It’s time to debunk some Myths!
The little bottle of Poppers has sparked significant interest and curiosity as a recreational substance for more years than I care to remember. However, it’s important to dispel the misconception that poppers are solely associated with the LGBTQ+ community, specifically gay men.
In this concise blog piece, we strive to enlighten readers about this topic, dispel misconceptions, and delve into the wider community of popper users.
A Trip Back In Time
To first do this let’s take a trip back in time to understand the context of Poppers, and what they actually are!
Poppers, scientifically known as alkyl nitrites, were initially created as a medical remedy for angina pectoris. These substances offered relief to people experiencing chest pain due to their vasodilating properties. Now who knew that the last time they opened a bottle!
However, over time poppers took on a new role, and popped up in clubs and bars for recreational use.
The History of Poppers
In popular history, the first instances of poppers being used as a party enhancer was within the gay scene of the 70’s and 80’s Originally sold in nightclubs, the small glass pipettes had a snap off top, allowing you to “pop” them open and use to enhance your sexual pleasure and hedonistic desire. You have to remember, back in the day, the “scene” was underground, and this was all part of the culture of the time.
Outside the Scene – Poppers Beyond the Gay Bars
Now I’m not saying we don’t use an awful lot of them, but one of the biggest misconceptions on the use of poppers is that it’s only the LGBTQ+ community that use them.
I know many straight couples who use and worked with a lady who loved to get down and dirty with her man on them. But still so many have the pre conceived thought that poppers are only for a small group of individuals, when I actual fact there is a whole spectrum of user out there. Users from all sexual demographics, using them for their own individual pleasures and stimulation, be that sexual or otherwise! You have to remember, poppers have no discrimination, they are not labelled as gay or straight, male or female. They can and are used by consenting adults of all walks of life!
Debunking the Myths!
There has always been myths around the use of poppers, and lets hope the above, and the knowledge that both straight and gay, male and female users enjoy the afterglow of poppers helps to dispel the one that only gay men use poppers. But what other myths are out there?
Well, the biggest is their legality. People still believe poppers are illegal to use. This is a lie, as Delores once declared. Poppers have been legal in the UK to sell and use for many years. I know for a fact that they have been available in shops since the early 1980’s, and who doesn’t remember the MP standing up in the hose of Commons declaring his personal use of them, when the government were looking at banning certain drugs!
Another myth is that they are harmful to you? Being someone who have used them for more than half his life, I can honestly say, I have never had issues with them. The one thing to remember when using poppers, use them responsibly! Poppers are classed as safe for most adults but remember what they are designed to do. So, if you have a heart condition, be warned!
So, gay or straight, the one thing to take away from this is that poppers are no longer linked to just one community but are used by all who enjoy the buzz you get from this little bottle.
In this blog we wanted to debunk the myths, and highlight the use by so many fun loving adults!
Embracing Diversity and Inclusivity.
Remember, poppers are designed as a recreational product, designed for the individual user to enjoy, either alone or with friends!
It’s always important to make responsible choices and stay informed when it comes to using any substance. Let’s keep the conversation about poppers open, positive, and inclusive. Remember, they’re available for everyone, no matter who you are.
